Workshop: Transitions to a Low Carbon Energy System in Europe |
|
organised by the EEAC Working Group Energy – Brussels, 4 October 2011
The Low Carbon Economy Roadmap of the European Commission advocates a close to complete decarbonisation of the Power Sector, while relying on a portfolio of nuclear, fossil and renewable technologies. The Energy Road Map will be a frame for the policy mix, necessary for achieving the overall goals of the Low Carbon Road Map. The Energy Road Map needs to offer an integrated perspective on technology choices, market order and support schemes and infrastructure policy and planning beyond 2020.
The EEAC Energy Working Group is advocating a transition to a low carbon economy which at the same time must be an exit strategy to nuclear and fossil fuels, respect biodiversity and may contribute to “green growth”. This topic will be addressed in the EEAC Annual Conference and further elaborated in a workshop, held in Brussels on 4 October 2011. A basis of this workshop is a discussion paper by the chair of the EEAC WG Energy, commenting the Commission’s “Roadmap for a competitive low carbon economy” from March 2011.

World in Transition – A Social Contract for Sustainability |
In this report, the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) lays out the reasons for the urgent need for a post-fossil economic strategy, yet it also concludes that the transition to sustainability is achievable, and presents ten concrete packages of measures to accelerate the imperative restructuring. If the transformation really is to succeed, we have to enter into a social contract for innovation, in the form of a new kind of discourse between governments and citizens, both within and beyond the boundaries of the nation state.
