Sustainable Land Use in Europe

Hosted by The Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution


The Third Annual Conference addressed the subject of sustainable land use in Europe. It was held at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in Reading, England, and organised by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution on behalf of the advisory bodies.

The conference was chaired by Sir John Houghton, the Chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and by the Earl of Cranbrook, the Chairman of English Nature. It was attended by about 50 delegates, mainly representatives of a range of European environmental advisory bodies.

Following the conference a group representing some of the European environmental advisory bodies was set up to produce a statement developed from its conclusions. This statement covering environmentally sustainable land use, reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and development of a rural sustainability policy was published in 1996. Copies can be obtained from English Nature. It includes recommendations for action by the EU, EU Member States and by the WTO.
