and the Walloon Environmental Council for Sustainable Development (CWEDD)
Co-organised by the Belgian Federal Council for Sustainable Development (FRDO-CFFD)

Conference Background and Statement
For its 18th EEAC Annual Conference on “Sustainable Land Use”, EEAC has established a statement, which was endorsed by 14 national and regional environment and sustainable development advisory councils.

"In its statement, the EEAC considers 'sustainable land use' not as something that can be reached on isolated pieces of land: specific land uses must be considered in its combination with other, neighboring land uses and with its repercussions on landscapes, watersheds, and all relevant scales up to the global level. 'Sustainable land use' can then be seen as a dynamic state of land mosaics serving to meet current local and global needs while retaining the potential to meet future requirements. The challenge of 'sustainable land use' has many economic, political and governance aspects. Important ones among them are to integrate or harmonize the different EU policies that have impact on land use and to effectively incentivize sustainable land use. The EEAC asks the Commission to support an EU scheme aimed at a coherent network for connecting and strengthening landscapes. The EEAC recommends that the concept of 'sustainable land use' should form one of the main topics to be taken forward within the context of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy."

From 14 to 16 October the EEAC held its 18th Annual Conference in Bruges, Belgium. On 15 October different aspects of land use were discussed in depth in four breakout sessions, with speakers from the EEAC councils, the European Commission (DG Environment, Agriculture, Regional Policy and the Secretariat General) and the European Environment Agency (EEA), as well as other European organisations, such as the WWF, the European Landowners' Organisation (ELO) and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP). The EEAC was also pleased to have Karl Falkenberg, Director General of the DG Environment as a key note speaker.

On Thursday 14 October selected EEAC member councils presented recently published reports: "the environmental impacts of demographic change" (RCEP, UK); "The national resource strategy" (FNCR, FI); "the public campaign on the renewable energy report" (SRU, DE) and "recommendations of the Belgian sustainable development policy" (FRDO-CFDD, BE). This was followed by a special session organised by the Belgian FRDO-CFDD on "how to reinforce international governance for sustainable development".

The EEAC Annual Plenary Session (APS) was held on Saturday 16 October in Tournai, organised by the Walloon council CWEDD .

The EEAC would like to thank the Minaraad (Environment and Nature Council of Flanders), the Walloon Environmental Council for Sustainable Development (CWEDD) and the Belgian Federal Council for Sustainable Development (FRDO-CFFD) for their efforts in organising this excellent event.
