The Portuguese National Council on Environment and Sustainable Development (CNADS), set up during the first half of 1998, hosted the 8th Annual Conference of European Environmental Advisory Councils on 25 June 2000, focusing on a central theme "The Coastal Zones Sustainable Development Policies in Europe".
CNADS, chaired by Professor Mário Ruivo, is an independent advisory body with 30 members designated by the Governments of the Republic and the Regions (1/3) and by the different sectors of Civil Society (2/3). It therefore includes the scientific sector, the local communities, the economic sector, NGOs, academia and the work sector.
CNADS's scope and independence, taking into account a diversity of interests and sensitivities, both from institutions and the civil society, constitute the core of its role as a discussion forum, useful for the formulation of environmental and sustainable development policies for Portugal.
