National Council on the Environment (OKT)

Országos Környezetvédelmi Tanács

Other international activities

The OKT has also been part of the following international activities:

The National Environmental Council since its establishment is party to the co-operation which unites the environment protection and nature conservation advisory organs working in the member states of the European Union. In the majority of the European countries there is at least one independent professional body, which takes part in the development of environment policy as advisor on regional/national levels. The environmental protection councils help the governments’ work with developing national nature conservation and environment policies and medium and long-term strategy taking scientific, social, international and sustainability criteria into account. Since environmental problems become global, international co-operation is indispensable.

The councils hold conferences once a year to discuss an environment policy/strategy issue. The network drafts joint positions and recommendations and forward them on the one hand to their own governments, on the other to the respective organs of the Union – the Parliament and its specialised committees and specialised directorates, etc.

The National Environmental Council hosted the conference "Relationship between environmental resources and tourism" initiated by the Finnish and Hungarian Academies of Sciences and organised jointly with the sustainable development committee of the Finnish Government between April 19 and 20 in 1999.

In the same year, a series of programs entitled "World Conference of Science" began at the initiation of UNESCO and ICSU organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Delegations of almost 150 countries were present at the conference, among them ministers, presidents of Academies and representatives of governmental and non-governmental organisations. The Council took part in the section "Science and environment" of the conference as an invited body and its officials acted as chairmen.
