Present Priority Fields (2010)
- January 2010: Adoption of the Updated National Strategy for Sustainable Development ( the title: "Strategic Framework for Sustainable Development in the Czech Republic");
- January - June 2010: Elaboration of an Implementation Plan to the National SDS;
- July - December 2010: Gradual Realisation of the Implementation Plan;
- January - June 2010: Elaboration of the Local Agenda 21 National Development Concept;
- September 2010 - September 2011: Preparatory Works for the Fourth Progress Report on the National SDS;
- November 2010: Annual Forum for Sustainable Development;
- May 2010 at the latest - Annual NCSD Report (2009) to the Government;
- June 2010 - Action Plan to the Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development Finalisation;
- All year: Implementation of the Communication Strategy and Communication Action Plan for the period of 2008-2010;

Future Priority Fields (2011 and forward)
- November 2011: Finalisation of the Fourth Progress Report on the National SDS, submission to the Government;
- December 2011: Publication of the Fourth Progress Report on the National SDS in Czech - English language version;
- January - December 2011: Further Realisation of the Implementation Plan to the National SDS;
- Advising the Government in the form of Council´s resolutions;
- Monitoring the implementation of national strategies and documents related to sustainable development;
- Coordination of sectoral concepts and strategies (recommendations, opinions);

Background and Mission
Establishment
The Government Council for Sustainable Development of the Czech Republic (RVUR) was established in July 2003 by a Resolution of the Czech Government. The Council is a standing advisory, initiating and co-ordinating body of the Government of the Czech Republic in the field of sustainable development and strategic management.

Mission
The RVUR shall within the scope of its activities, initiate, draft, coordinate, monitor, review, assess and support strategic dimensions in the management of the state. It shall propose measures to be taken with a view to harmonise long-term intents and goals with medium-term and short-term goals and programmes in compliance with the principles of sustainable development. It shall monitor and assess global phenomena and developmental opportunities, and propose timely and adequate response by the state to them. The Council shall coordinate and monitor the implementation of the principles of sustainable development while achieving a dynamic balance between its economic, social and environmental components.

Council members
The RVUR is composed of governmental members that are proposed by the relevant Ministers, the Chairmen of the two Parliamentary Chambers, the Council of Governors (composed of the 14 Governors of the different regional offices) and the Association of Cities and Municipalities and appointed by the Executive Vice-Chairman. The non-governmental council members are nominated by the Vice-Chairmen of the Council and the Executive Vice-Chairman.
27 Council Members serve a 4-year term, 11 of them have been re-appointed after the first term ended.

Work Style
Tasks of the Council
- Co-ordination and commission of work related to the drafting of an umbrella strategic document, the National Sustainable Development Strategy of the Czech Republic and its progress reports;
- Proposing measures to harmonise other related overarching or sectoral strategies, concepts and policies, including indicators for monitoring their implementation;
- Reviewing implementation of the Strategy and initiating its update;
- Initiating, coordinating and providing for co-operation between the central state administration, the Parliament, major groups, stakeholders and personalities involved in the field of sustainable development;
- Promotion of public discussions (e.g. regional round tables, national forums).
Strategic focuses for the council are:
- Identifying crucial unsustainable trends and recommending actions to reverse them;
- Assessing and proposing necessary measures to ensure interrelation and cohesion between economic, social and environmental strategies, concepts and policies and other sectoral or territorial programming documents, including legislative measures, to be considered by the Government;
- Promoting the implementation of the principles of sustainable development by the individual ministries and territorial self-governing units;
- Promoting the implementation of local Agenda 21;
- 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production with the elaboration of specific programmes and action plans;
- Co-ordination of activities of the Czech Republic regarding Sustainable Development, in relation to the EU, the UN Commission for Sustainable Development and to the OECD.

Type of Advice
The Council adopts resolutions related to issues being negotiated, including proposed opinions and recommendations, for the Czech Government or other central administration bodies based either on its own initiative or on the governmental request.

Substructure and Working Groups
The Council has two committees (Committee for the Strategy, Committee for Communication) and seven working groups (WG for indicators, WG for sustainable consumption and production, WG for sustainable development of regions, municipalities and spatial planning, WG for the coordination of preparatory work for the meetings of the UN CSD, WG for the OECD sustainable development project, WG for local Agenda 21 and WG for Education on Sustainable Development).

Council Meetings
The Council’s meetings shall take place on a regular basis according to the work plan to be adopted by the Council at its first meeting in each calendar year, at least once every 3 (three) months. In 2010, the first meeting is scheduled for: 25 March.
